If you’ve ever seen an adaptive sports game on wheelchairs, you may have noticed that the athletes do not play in normal everyday wheelchairs. While there are a lot of differences, the most noticeable are that they are not as bulky, have lower backs and have lightweight wheels that slant inward. These are adaptive sports wheelchairs, specially made to allow for better speed, maneuverability and can be used on various wheelchair sports such as wheelchair basketball, wheelchair racing, wheelchair hand cycling, wheelchair tennis, wheelchair golf, wheelchair archery and Wheelchair rugby. A typical sport wheelchair will cost anywhere from $2,000 – $3,500 depending on the options.

On June 24th, the Rotary Club of Oldsmar/Eastlake delivered the first five adaptive sports wheelchair to the Tampa Bay Wounded Warriors Project. These wheelchairs will help enhance recovery by engaging wounded, ill, and injured service members early in individualized physical and cognitive activities outside of the traditional therapy settings to inspire recovery and physical fitness and encourage new opportunities for growth and achievement. “The benefits of physical activity for injured Service members include reduced stress, increased quality of life, lower blood pressure, weight management, and enhancement of the rehabilitative process” said Wounded Warriors Project’s CEO, Lieutenant General Michael Linnington (Retired).

At the request of the Wounded Warriors Project, the Rotary Club of Oldsmar/Eastlake together with Lockheed Martin Professional Asian American Network (PAAN) has once again, raised enough fund to purchase the add-on basketball wing sets designed specifically for the wheelchairs basketball game. Steve Phillips, Oldsmar/Eastlake Rotary club secretary personally delivered the add-on basketball wing sets to Denis Spizuoco, Principal Gift Specialist at the Wounded Warriors Project in Tampa last week. Another well done project!
More than $1400 left over after purchasing the wing sets was donated to The Children’s Home Network to purchase uniforms for the kids.
Again, kudos o’plenty are definitely in order for Lockheed Martin Professional Asian American Network (PAAN) and all the Rotarians involved.
